Game Habitat will co-locate with Minc and Media Evolution to kick-start Malmö Generate District. The move places games in a hotbed for growth and innovation, ensuring continued success for the region’s world-class game development industry.
It’s a major effort that has been in the works for more than a year. Three of Malmö’s most impactful innovation and cluster organisations, together with the City of Malmö, join forces to kick-start Malmö Generate District, the city’s new innovation area. By placing games in the new area, games become an indisputable part of South Sweden’s innovation support system for years to come, while maintaining all the things that have been built over the years at Game Habitat’s current premises.
– This is a long-term, sustainable home that’s really good for Game Habitat and the region’s games industry. Co-locating in the new area with Minc and Media Evolution allows for exciting synergies while we all maintain our defining characteristics. This is a natural next chapter for games in Malmö and we’ll be able to reap benefits from this for many years to come, says Peter Lübeck, CEO of Game Habitat.
A hub for games
When Game Habitat was founded in 2013, one of its original goals was to establish a physical hub and meeting place for the games industry in South Sweden. A few years later, in 2018, exactly that was accomplished when DevHub opened its doors at Torggatan 2 in Malmö. Since then, DevHub has housed more than 125 game companies and 550 game developers, making it one of the largest office buildings dedicated to game development in the world.
A physical hub and meeting place remain vital for the region’s games industry, and Game Habitat will continue to maintain that. The space in the new house will however be operated by Media Evolution, freeing up much-needed resources for Game Habitat to focus on other things. Game Habitat will of course continue to fill the space with content, such as game-related happenings and events, and aim to maintain the same game dev feeling in the new house that visitors and tenants have grown accustomed to at our current location.
– For seven years, DevHub has been vital in developing the regional games community and serving as a symbol for Malmö as a world-class game hub. With this move, we’re making sure there will be a dedicated place for game development in South Sweden for years to come, says Peter Lübeck, CEO at Game Habitat.
Moving in 2026
Game Habitat will leave its current premises at Torggatan 2 on 1 April 2026 to move a few blocks further north into Minc’s house at Anckargripsgatan 3 in Malmö. And by the end of 2026, we’ll move again, one more block to the north, as it’s expected that we’ll then be able to move into the new house at Isbergs gata 2 which is currently being repurposed to fit our needs. At the same time, at the end of 2026, Minc will leave their current premises at Anckargripsgatan 3 to join us in the new house. Game Habitat will occupy one wing on the second floor in the new house, and Minc the other wing on the same floor.
Many current DevHub tenants and other regional game companies are expected to take up space in the new house.
Moving to the new location creates a long-term sustainable solution for Game Habitat to continue to realize the vision of South Sweden as the world’s most successful, creative, and diverse ecosystem for global game development.
We expect to share more details about the new house in the new year. For any game company already interested in renting space in the new building, reach out to hello@gamehabitat.se and let us know about your interest so that we can share information with you as soon as we have more details.
